# Nutrition & Meal Planning: The 80% That Actually Drives Results

> Most fitness plans lead with workouts and treat food as an afterthought. SoVik does the opposite — here's the philosophy and what the research actually supports.

Every SoVik programme is built around one guiding ratio: 80% nutrition, 20% workout. It's our own coaching principle, not a figure from a study — but it reflects a simple reality: a punishing workout burns a few hundred calories, and one poorly-chosen meal can undo that in minutes.

That's why our coaching spends more time on what and when you eat than on which exercises you do — and it's also why the numbers below are worth knowing, not just the philosophy.

## Meal patterns: what the research actually shows

A common approach we use is 5-6 smaller meals through the day rather than 2-3 large ones. It's worth being straight about why: this isn't because more frequent meals have been proven to boost metabolism or burn more fat. A 2015 meta-analysis of 15 studies on meal frequency found the apparent body-composition benefit disappeared once one outlier study was excluded, and the authors urged caution about the whole idea.

The real reason smaller, more frequent meals work for a lot of people is behavioural: fewer long gaps mean less extreme hunger, which makes it easier to stick to portions you decided on in advance rather than ones decided by how hungry you are at 8pm. If three larger meals suits your schedule and appetite better, that's a legitimate structure too — the number of meals matters far less than whether you can actually follow the plan.

Herbalife Nutrition, our nutrition partner since 2017, forms the backbone of the meal-replacement and supplementation side of this approach.

## Some numbers worth knowing

These are general population guidelines, not a personalised prescription — but they're useful reference points when you're building your own plate. WHO's healthy-diet guidance recommends at least 400g of fruit and vegetables a day, limiting free sugars to under 10% of daily calories (with extra benefit below 5%), keeping total fat under 30% of calories and saturated fat under 10%, and capping salt at about 5g a day.

On protein, the International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand puts 1.4-2.0g of protein per kg of body weight per day as sufficient for most people who exercise regularly, rising toward 2.3-3.1g/kg for people in a calorie deficit who are trying to hold onto muscle. Your own coach can turn these general ranges into an actual number for your body weight and goal.

## The variable people skip: sleep

This is also the exact concept behind SoVik's "Family Fitness & Breakfast Studios" — breakfast specifically, because it's the meal people skip most often and the one that sets the tone for the rest of the day.

But the other commonly-missed variable is sleep. In a controlled study, two groups followed the same reduced-calorie diet for two weeks; the only difference was 8.5 hours of sleep versus 5.5 hours a night. Both groups lost a similar amount of total weight — but the sleep-restricted group lost 55% less of it as fat, and more of it as muscle, along with feeling hungrier throughout. If your nutrition and [training](https://sovik.co.in/blog/how-to-gain-muscle-and-weight) are both dialled in but sleep isn't, that's a real reason results can stall.

We're upfront that results vary and specific outcomes aren't guaranteed — nutrition doesn't support one-size-fits-all promises. What we can say is that having a plan removes a lot of decisions you'd otherwise be making hungry or in a hurry, and that's true whether your goal is fat loss, muscle gain, or just eating in a way that doesn't leave you exhausted by 4pm.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does SoVik focus on nutrition more than workouts?

Nutrition is where most of the day-to-day calorie balance is decided — a workout burns a few hundred calories, but what you eat the rest of the day has a much bigger cumulative effect. It's our coaching principle rather than a lab-measured ratio, but it's why we spend the most time there.

### Do I need to eat 5-6 meals a day to lose weight?

No — research hasn't shown that meal frequency itself changes fat loss. It's offered as an option because smaller, more frequent meals help some people avoid the extreme hunger that derails portion control; if fewer, larger meals suit you better, that works just as well.

### How much protein do I actually need?

General sports-nutrition guidance for people who exercise regularly is about 1.4-2.0g of protein per kg of body weight per day, more (up to roughly 2.3-3.1g/kg) if you're in a calorie deficit and want to preserve muscle. Your coach can turn that into a specific target for your weight and goal.
